The Plantaris is a fine pencil like tendon running from behind the knee down to the heel next to the Achilles. It’s function is to work with the Achilles to flex the ankle, allowing you to stand on your toes or point your foot. The Plantaris starts just above inner calf muscle and runs beneath it and soleus muscles finishing at the heel beside the Achilles tendon.
Symptoms of the Plantaris:
You may hear a pop in the back of the calf.
Pain and swelling most commonly at the junction of calf muscle and the Achilles tendon, the location of the rupture.
Pain when moving the foot either when pulling toes towards the body or pointing them, exercises such as squatting, take off when running.
